From Student to Teacher: The Day You Start Standing at the Front of the Room

I’ll never forget my first time teaching yoga. I was in the middle of my own teacher training, and my instructor—without warning—told me to lead the group through Sun Salutations.

Now, I’ve been on stage before. I’ve played music in front of a crowd, and I’ve spoken to rooms full of people. But this was different.

The moment I stood up there, mat in front of me, eyes staring back, I realized I wasn’t performing anymore. I was guiding. It started fine enough—inhale, arms overhead… exhale, fold forward. But halfway through, I lost track of what side we were on. My palms were sweaty. My brain raced. My voice cracked. I was convinced everyone could see right through me.
And then something clicked.

I looked out at the room and realized: none of this is about me.

It wasn’t about my nerves or my “performance” or whether I had the perfect words; it was about the people in front of me. They were trusting me to guide them somewhere they might not go on their own. That was the job.

That shift—from focusing on myself to focusing on them—changed everything.

At Burning Wheel Yoga School, we give you that moment on purpose, right from the start. We don’t save teaching for the final weekend like a big dramatic reveal. You step into the role early, because the only way to find your authentic voice is to use it. The only way to gain confidence is to show up even when you’re shaking. The only way to discover the kind of teacher you are is… well, to teach.

Finding Your Voice, Together

The best part is that you’re not alone in it. From your first attempt to your hundredth, you’re surrounded by a supportive group who will laugh with you, cheer for you, and hold the room when you lose your place. By the time you finish, standing at the front won’t just be a “moment,it’ll be your new comfort zone.

If you’re ready for your own first time—nerves, sweaty palms, voice cracks and all—our October 2025 training is where it begins. I promise, you’ll never forget it!
