# Heart-Mind Fitness: Your Thoughts and Emotions Are Not Separate

[Previous Post](https://www.burningwheelyoga.com/yoga-insights-blog-burning-wheel-yoga-school/nervous-system-fitness-why-calm-isnt-always-the-goal)

We often talk about mental health and emotional health as though the mind thinks and the heart feels.

Yoga doesn't make that distinction quite so neatly.

One of the Sanskrit words we encounter in yoga philosophy is citta. It is often translated as “mind,” but that translation can be misleading because the English word mind tends to make us think primarily about thought.

Citta is closer to heart-mind.

It points toward the inner field in which thinking, feeling, remembering, perceiving, and reacting are continually influencing one another.

You don't have thoughts over here and emotions over there.

You have an experience.

## Thought Creates Feeling. Feeling Creates Thought.

Imagine waking up tomorrow morning and seeing a meeting on your calendar.

The meeting itself is simply an event.

Then a thought appears: This isn't going to go well.

Your body responds. Your stomach tightens. Your breathing changes. You feel anxious.

Now the anxiety produces another thought: Something must really be wrong. Why else would I feel this way?

That thought increases the anxiety.

The emotion influences the next thought. The thought influences the next emotion.

Soon you are experiencing something very real in response to an event that hasn't happened yet.

Which came first, the thought or the feeling?

Eventually, it doesn't matter.

They are participating in the same process.

## Heart-Mind Fitness Is Not Positive Thinking

If fitness is capacity, then heart-mind fitness is our capacity to experience thoughts and emotions without immediately becoming governed by them.

That doesn't mean replacing every unpleasant thought with a pleasant one.

It doesn't mean trying to remain happy.

And it certainly doesn't mean pretending anger, fear, sadness, jealousy, or grief shouldn't exist.

These experiences contain information.

Fitness develops through our ability to receive that information without immediately surrendering our capacity to choose.

- Can you notice anger before speaking from it?
- Can you experience fear while remaining curious about what the fear is telling you?
- Can you recognize a thought as a thought rather than immediately treating it as reality?
- Can you feel deeply without losing your ability to discern?

These capacities can be trained.

## Creating Space

This is one reason yoga asks us to *pay attention.*

During a physical practice, something becomes difficult, and the heart-mind responds.

I can't do this.

Frustration appears.

Everyone else is better than me.

Embarrassment appears.

I should be able to do this.

Anger appears.

The posture didn't create these patterns. It gave them somewhere to become visible.

And visibility creates possibility.

If I can recognize what is happening while it is happening, I have created a little space between experience and response.

Within that space, another choice becomes available.

That is practice.

## A Fit Heart-Mind Has Range

Heart-mind fitness doesn't produce a person who is perpetually peaceful.

A fit heart-mind can experience the full range of being human.

Joy. Anger. Fear. Excitement. Grief. Desire. Disappointment. Love.

The fitness is found in our capacity to move through these experiences without becoming trapped inside any one of them.

Sometimes anger asks us to act.

Sometimes fear asks us to pay attention.

Sometimes grief asks us to stop.

Sometimes joy asks us to open completely.

Fitness includes the discernment to recognize what the moment is asking of us.

The goal is not to control the heart-mind.

The practice is learning how to listen to it without automatically obeying everything it says.

That is heart-mind fitness.

And like every other kind of fitness, it develops through practice.
